Black coffee
Curator's Notes
Portrait Coffee takes its name from a mission: to change the picture that comes to mind when people think of specialty coffee, and to include the Black and brown faces that have been cropped out for too long. Co-founders Aaron Fender and Khalid Smith, both Atlanta natives who have worked in specialty coffee since 2012, started Portrait in 2019 with a Kickstarter campaign and a central question: who stands to benefit from each cup? Based in the Historic West End of Atlanta, their entire team is made up of Southwest Atlanta residents deeply invested in their community, creating genuine career opportunities in coffee for people who've historically been excluded from it. Sprudge's Notable Coffee Roaster of the Year in 2020. A catalyst for new representation in specialty coffee, and one of the most important roasters on this platform. In the cup, expect traceable, beautifully sourced coffees that honor coffee's African roots and the farming communities behind every bag.
From the Roaster
Named for a desire to change the picture of what comes to mind when people think of specialty coffee, Portrait Coffee is as committed to rewriting that narrative as it is to reflecting the history and culture of its West End Atlanta community. Since its 2019 founding, Portrait has stayed true to both missions daily as it serves up genuine coffee while “pouring a new narrative.”
