Proud Mary was founded by husband and wife Nolan and Shari Hirte in Melbourne, Australia in 2009, and has been doing things their own way ever since. When Nolan opened their first U.S. cafe in Portland in 2017, it was a watershed moment for Australian coffee culture in America. Today, their bright, culinary playground cafes in Portland and Austin celebrate just how fun and delicious coffee can be, with all-day breakfast, fresh pastries, and table service alongside some of the most carefully sourced coffees on the planet. I met Nolan while we were both on jury duty (the fun kind!) for Cup of Excellence, and his passion, personality, and coffee knowledge were next-level. It shows in every cup. Long-standing producer relationships, signature collector tins packed with Cup of Excellence winners, and an innovative Melbourne spirit meets Portland adventurousness that makes Proud Mary completely one of a kind. In the cup, expect refined yet experimental coffees that range from approachable, caramel-sweet blends to extraordinary rare microlots.
