Coffee by Design has been doing things the right way since 1994, when co-founders Mary Allen Lindemann and Alan Spear returned to a recession-hit Portland, Maine and bet on community, quality, and integrity over shortcuts. Woman-owned, B Corp certified, and deeply rooted in direct farmer relationships, CBD roasts every batch fresh in small batches and reinvests in their people, their city, and the arts that give it soul. "Excellent fruit-forward coffee! I have stayed away from traditional earthy-tobacco notes in wet-hulled Sumatra's, and this natural process (different than the wet-hulled) reminds me of a traditional Ethiopia - creamy at first, with fruit notes really shining as it cools. Excellent coffee that makes me wonder what is possible in the region if growers shift away from the traditional processing methods."
